Sumsung Galexy s7 – Our First Review for S7

Introduction

New rumors suggest the Galaxy S7 will look mostly like the Galaxy S6, with only a few tweaks to the design and a new 3D Touch-like screen technology. Samsung is going to have to do a lot of work to be able to repeat the trick – but there’s much more that can be improved on in the new phone, so there’s plenty of scope.

Release Date

China Mobile put a post up on social media showing all the big phone launches it expects to see in the coming months and the Samsung Galaxy S7 was included under MWC 2016. This year MWC is held between February 22-25 and rumors about Galaxy S7 are on February 21.

Price

We expected the Galaxy S7 will see a 10 percent price drop compared to the S6 at launch.

Design

A report from Korea suggested that the Galaxy S7 design will be very similar to its predecessor, the S6. Samsung sees little point in spending time and money reinventing a design that has proven successful and prefers to focus its energy on improving speed, display quality and cost. The only noticeable differences shown in these renders are that the home button has adopted a rectangular shape, shedding the rounded corners of the S6, the SIM card slot has been moved further down the right-hand side, and the front-facing camera now sits to the far right of the top panel. The most interesting piece of information to come from the renders is the measurements of not one but two devices.samsung galaxy s7 - design While the standard S7 looks set to have almost exactly the same dimensions as the S6, the second device’s measurements are 163.32 x 82.01 x 7.82mm.  This would suggest that the larger Galaxy S7 device will have a huge 6-inch display, 0.3 inches bigger than even the Note 5’s display. On top of that the Galaxy S7 may be built of a different type of metal. Sources claim the company is experimenting with a magnesium based alloy that will make the phone stronger whilst keeping it light and allow the heat out when the processor is working hard.

Display

Samsung Galaxy S7 claims it has a 5.7-inch display. It lists a 1440 x 2560 QHD one though rather than 4K that some had predicted. Another spec leak suggests the Galaxy S7 will come with a 5.1-inch display and a pixel resolution of 1440 x 2560, which will probably be the ‘normal’ variant. It looks like Samsung could adopt a similar feature to the iPhone 6S’ 3D Touch technology. A company called Synaptics has a technology called ClearForce that allows for different functionality depending on how hard you’re pressing on the screen. A curved screen has again been mooted more than once – but a flexible display rather than just the standard curve, with Samsung said to be ordering a large amount of the tech from a Taiwanese manufacturer. And it could have super-strong display technology called Turtle Glass from Samsung, set to replace Corning’s Gorilla Glass 3.samsung galaxy s7 - display

Software

The Galaxy S7 will almost definitely land with Android 6.0 Marshmallow operating system straight out of the box. That’s set to bring a number of perks including Android Pay, improved app permissions, standardised fingerprint support, and battery life improvements. That document leak we mentioned earlier also made reference to Android M for the codename “Jungfrau” hero device that’s expected to be the Galaxy S7, so bear that in mind. Also worth noting is a new report in 2016 that points to Samsung testing out a new feature called Vivid Photo that will emulate Apple’s Live Photos feature, as introduced on the iPhone 6S back in September.

OS and Power

The Samsung Galaxy S7 will almost certainly launch with Android Marshmallow. In fact snaps of supposed internal Samsung documents appeared on social networking site Weibo, and appear to confirm the rumored Galaxy S7 codename ‘Jungfrau’ and the new Android OS coming at launch. A new rumor coming out of China suggests Samsung will be adding liquid cooling to the Galaxy S7. It would act against the phone overheating and draining the battery, making sure things stay cooler and better-performing, with the possibility of higher-spec components. Samsung’s Galaxy S7 is rumored to come in two different variants – one with an Exynos chipset and another with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820. samsung galaxy s7 - OS and Power

Camera

The Galaxy S7 rear camera is all but confirmed as a 12 MP number, accompanied by a 5 MP front-facing camera. This is a reduction in pixel count compared with the S6 camera, but Samsung is said to be looking into other ways to improve the quality of the camera, namely through an increased sensor size and dual-photodiode technology. This essentially places two diodes on each pixel of the sensor, allowing each pixel to record a pair of parallax images, which are then brought into alignment, increasing the focus quality. Rumor coming out Samsung is planning to implement a camera feature called either Vivid Photo or Timeless Photo intended to rival Apple’s Live Photos. The feature works by capturing 1.5 seconds of video before and after a photo is taken.

Battery Life

Rumor saying that that the S7 and S7 Edge will both have larger batteries than their predecessors. The S7 is said to pack a 3,000 mAh battery, and the S7 Edge, a 3,600 mAh battery, an increase of 450 and 1,000 mAh, respectively. Removable batteries remain off the table, however.
